The Audi RS e-tron GT Is Hot Wheels Mainline Perfection

We all know the Hot Wheels mainline serves as a gateway drug of sorts into the world of 1/64 diecast collecting. They offer a great blend of value for money and are easy and affordable to build a collection out of.  However, like many collectors, I find myself collecting fewer and fewer of these mainline Hot Wheels in favor of not just Hot Wheels premiums, but also more detailed brands like MiniGT and Inno64.  Yet every once in a while, Hot Wheels swings for the fences and knocks one out of the park, and this Audi RS ETron GT might just be the home run of the year.

The RS e-tron GT has always been a good casting, with good proportions and a perfect stance, but its previous releases always fell short of perfection.  The first couple releases lacked the body-colored detailing in the grille, then once we got a properly detailed light blue model it was plagued by unrealistic, cartoonish wheels.  Subsequent models have come close but never quite nailed the final result.

This new version, in Audi’s unique if not classically beautiful Olive Green paint, finally nails it.  This is a perfect mainline.  The gray wheels are the perfect size for the casting and fit the car’s style to a tee.

The front end is incredibly detailed for a mainline model, with headlights, black bumper detailing, an Audi logo, and even a license plate!  Perhaps I just got lucky, but the sharpness and placement of the printed detailing on this model are far better than I typically expect from a mainline Hot Wheels.

The rear detailing shows similar precision, with another realistic Euro-style license plate (love to see it), badges, and of course the e-tron’s signature rear lightbar.

Where so many of Hot Wheels’ current mainline models leave me feeling like they cheaped out in one place or another, this model feels like it received all the detailing it needs without any compromises.  Obviously, it doesn’t have the heft of a premium model, but that’s not what a mainline is supposed to be anyway.  This is a truly wonderful, charming rendition of a cool car in a pocketable size for barely more than a dollar.  What more can you ask for?
