Matchbox News – 11/21/2023 – Porsche 911 Targa, Aventador SVJ, Bronco, and Lots of Recolors!

When it rains, it pours with Matchbox news and this weekend was one heck of a rainstorm.  After some fairly uninteresting sneaks on the official matchboxworld Instagram account, we got to see an upcoming mix of basics, and upcoming mix of Moving Parts, and the next Collector’s mix!

Let’s start with the most exciting news: an upcoming Moving Parts assortment which I would guess will be the 3rd set of 2024.  Since there’s only 5 models here, we can probably expect some repeats in the case.

We better hope this Lamborghini Aventador SVJ Roadster is one of those repeats!  After being teased at two Gatherings in a row, the SVJ Roadster is finally here!  This is the kind of exotic excellence that would have been unthinkable from Matchbox just a few short years ago.  Finished in a lovely orange and with plenty of details, it’s great to see this model finally being released.  Frankly, it had been teased for so long that I was beginning to wonder if we would ever actually see it!  If you want to see this model in more detail, take a look at my recap of this year’s Gathering.

The Alfa Romeo Stelvio makes its first appearance in production form, ready to enter Matchbox’s rapidly expanding selection of Alfa Romeo models.  Being an Alfa Romeo, the Stelvio simply had to debut in red – that is tradition, after all.  I wish we could see more of the front end detailing, but I’m sure better views will come soon.

We saw this Ram Ambulance on the matchboxworld Instagram just a few weeks ago, so it’s good to see it already making its way into production.  As I mentioned in that news post, the Matchbox County Fire/Ambulance theme is my new favorite Matchbox theme, with colors that are just lovely.  Of course, the Ram Ambulance is also one of the best ambulance castings in Matchbox history, so this will undoubtedly be a popular model.

After a few years of neglecting muscle cars, Matchbox seems ready to bring them back into the line, and this 1970 AMC Javelin looks up to the task!  I’m still not a huge fan of these wheels though, and I think many of Matchbox’s muscle cars look far better when they’re given a restomod look with 5-spoke wheels

This 1978 Ford Bronco made two appearances this week, both in final packaging and loose.  This deco is cool, though it’s not a car that particularly excites me.  I do like the white topper though!

I’m far more excited about this Porsche 911 Targa!  This blue color is drop-dead gorgeous, and I’m glad to see some clean silver wheels included, rather than the gold wheels Matchbox has been overusing lately.  This casting’s proportions look bang-on, and I’m glad to see front and rear detailing, but I can’t help but be disappointed that Matchbox didn’t give us silver detailing on the roof bar.  That silver trim is perhaps the 911 Targa’s most distinctive styling feature, and this model just looks weird without it.  I’d love to see Matchbox up their price point by 50 cents in order to give us more detailing, but I’ll still definitely be picking up this 911 Targa.

The Mercedes-AMG SL 63 looked good in its debut blue, but this very metallic black is a perfect recolor.  The black paint matches the wheels so well, and the silver lip makes the tires look more low-profile.  Bravo Matchbox, I can’t wait to get my hands on this one!

With all the hype surrounding the black RX-8, I’m glad to see the red recolor coming out so soon.  I actually think the RX-8 looks better in this bright red color, as it gives the car a classic sports car look.  We’ve seen sneaks of this model loose in a previous news post.

We’ve also seen this BMW 3 Series Touring before too, hidden in the very back of another picture.  This is our first good look at it, and while I like this casting, I wish Matchbox would be a bit more adventurous with the colors on it.  This gray also seems a bit too dark compared to the grays I typically see on BMWs of this era.

I love the new Porsche Cayenne Turbo casting (so much so that it was my number one new model last year), so I’m happy to see it getting so much use!  This pearl white paint looks expensive and fitting for the car, and I really like the contrast provided by the black wheels and tinted windows.  As much as I love it though, I hope the next Porsche SUV we see is a mainline version of the new Macan casting.

The rest of the mainline leaks can be viewed on the macnninc Instagram, including a teal Chevy C10, a light blue Ford Bronco, a green recolor of the Opel Kadett, and a red recolor of the Autozam AZ-1.

We also got a look at the next Collector’s series mix, featuring a number of cars we’ve already seen, including the Bugatti Divo, Ford Panel Delivery, and Lexus LX.

This flat gray Nissan Z is new, and it looks rather handsome on that paint color.  It’s also riding on Matchbox’s new premium 5 spoke wheels, though they look rather weird in all black.  I’m definitely experiencing some Nissan Z fatigue, as it feels like every diecast company on the planet is making as many versions of this car as they can.  Still, this is the first time I’ve seen this color on a model.

This pale yellow is a rather cool color for the Mitsubishi 3000GT, too!  This is the first time we’ve seen the new premium 5 spokes with silver spokes, which definitely look quite a bit better than the all black version.  Unfortunately, I don’t feel like this premium model looks meaningfully better than its basic counterparts, so I’m probably going to skip this model.

Finally, let’s move on to the comparatively boring sneaks from the official matchboxworld Instagram.  The Ford Mustang Boss 302 is getting a black recolor, which looks much better (to my eye) than the blue debut color.  This casting would definitely benefit from a chrome base, as the gray plastic bumpers look a bit weird.

The Mazda RX-7 Convertible is one of the cooler Moving Parts cars to come out this year, so I’m happy to see it making a return.  Now in a classic sports car red, this model is sure to make a great companion to the RX-8 in the mainline.  Does anyone else think Matchbox should make a Then & Now series?

Though I hate the wheels on it, I have to admit this Buick Riviera looks pretty great, with lots of chrome/white detailing.  Note the gold Mercedes in the background, likely destined for the Collector’s series as well.

That’s it for this week’s monster of a news post.  As usual, the list of upcoming Matchbox models has been updated to reflect this new information.
